Music & Worship Arts Director at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church 25 May

Description: Part-time
1) A Capable and Curious Researcher
• Come alongside the congregation and staff in seeking how God is growing, challenging, healing, and awakening us—and to select hymns, instruments, songs, and musical styles accordingly.
• Explore hymns developed within traditions spanning other ethnicities /cultures for use in congregational singing, or for being incorporated in other creative ways in worship, that the congregation might be edified by (and made more aware of its unity with) the trans-historical, transnational Church.
• Learn from and partner with other worship leaders in St. Louis.
• Learn the historical context behind the songs chosen and weave this knowledge into the song selection to enhance worship themes— e.g. to meaningfully celebrate, lament, and pray for current/local events.
• Continue to write music and develop in your own music style, ability, and taste.

2) An Encouraging, Organized Rehearsal Leader
• During rehearsals aim for all participants to have efficient, effective and enjoyable time. Take time to adequately explain and deeply enjoy the lyrics and music together.
• Arrange songs to incorporate styles and strengths of the vocalists and musicians in our congregation.
• Embrace a first-to-arrive, last-to-leave mentality on Sundays.

3) A Relational Musician
• Recruit musicians without pressuring or guilt tactics. Develop relationships with musicians that are a blessing to them. Be aware of when people need to step back for a season, and then follow up with them. Bring any pastoral care opportunities to pastoral leadership.
• Vet musicians, identifying any who may not be a good fit before recruiting them—it is always easier to not have someone join than it is to remove them from the team. This is not just a skill assessment, but a thoughtful consideration of what has formed someone’s view of worship and its purpose.
• Seek to use musical intelligence to bring the community together around the emotive impact of the gospel lesson and liturgical theme or season. This would ideally approximate the range of emotion found in the Psalms as you help the community respond to the realities of life with trust in God’s faithfulness.

4) A Responsive Administrator
• Work with the pastor to understand and establish the theme of each Sunday worship service
• If possible, schedule a different worship music leader once every 1-2 months, so you can occasionally worship without responsibilities.
• Equip music team with links to music and any scratch tracks or sound files for the songs. Familiarity with Planning Center or some other team management system is a plus.

Pay: Compensation would be commensurate with experience. In addition, Good Shepherd has a 2-bedroom manse (a value of about $1,200/month), which would be available to the candidate.
